HEW LOCKE AT ARTSWAY

ArtSway have an interesting programme of events planned alongside their exhibition of Hew Locke's Starchitect which opens on Saturday.  Locke's work looks at culture, identity and power and makes use of a diverse range of materials including plastic toys, silk flowers and sequins.  His new installation is constructed from cut sheets of plywood transforming the ArtSpace gallery and referencing his 2002 installation Cardboard Palace.  Locke has exhibited extensively in both the UK and US and was recently short-listed for the Fourth Plinth project in Trafalgar Square.

The programme starts with a gallery talk at the exhibition launch party when Locke will be discussing his new commission for ArtSway with the curator Peter Bonnell and includes a lecture by Karen Fielder exploring the idea of starchitect in architectural history and a talk by London based curator Paul Hedge who has worked with the artist for many years.  There is also a portfolio day aimed at sculptors when there are ten half hour slots available for critiques, portfolio reviews and careers advice.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Arts University College at Bournemouth and there is a complementary exhibition - Hew Locke: Are We There Yet - at The Gallery, the Arts University College at Bournemouth from 14 March. www.aucb.ac.uk
