ARC FREE TICKETS TO PAMELA SCOTT WILKIE ARTIST'S TALK

ARC has ten free tickets for the talk by artist, Pamela Scott Wilkie on Sunday 21 November, 3.30pm at Chalk Hill Contemporary Art, Guildford.

Pamela Scott Wilkie was born in London and originally studied Fine Art with a former student of W. R. Sickert. Interpreting experience through drawing and colour is a common thread that links her paintings, drawings, prints and artist's books. She is particularly interested in exploring memories of poetic moments when time seems to have been suspended. She was commissioned by the Ikon Gallery to make the Horizons series of prints in 2007, 18 prints depicting places visited all over the world. This came after an earlier series known as Journey from 1970, when Pamela drove overland to Asia from the UK through Turkey, Iran and remote parts of Afghanistan. She produced a suite of 20 hand-pulled screen prints based on this experience setting up a studio in Rawalpindi making them there. Pamela Scott Wilkie's work is in private collections in the UK and many parts of the world and in numerous public collections including the V&A and The Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands.

ARC has ten free tickets to this event (normal price £10) including refreshments. Please book with Chalk Hill Contemporary Art stating that you have responded to this call out. Tickets will be issued on a first come, first served basis.

NEXT TUESDAY - 2 NOVEMBER - LIFE DRAWING CLASS

Do you know that Life Drawing classes regularly take place at aspex on the first Tuesday of every month?  Led by artist Melanie Rose they provide an informal, relaxed environment in which both beginners and those with experience can develop their drawing skills. Melanie Rose specialises in drawing, but with a conceptual approach, in as much that she will use whatever is needed to communicate what she is exploring. In the past she has used super8 film, paint, installation, photography, sound and digital imagery. She is drawn to the bespoke and how it fits with the digital age and how education can benefit from technology, but also how audiences are exhausted of it. Consequently her fascination lies with the politics of delivery, seduction and the value of technology compared to that of the hand made. £15 per person and all materials are provided. Email info@aspex.org.uk or call 023 9277 8080 to reserve your place. www.melanierose.org.uk

LINDSAY SEERS, IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY 1.5

The installation of Lindsay Seer's exhibition at aspex is well under way and on schedule for the Preview on Saturday. It has to be this way 1.5  is a new commission by aspex and marks Lindsay Seers’ continued attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of her stepsister, Christine Parkes.  The work takes full advantage of the gallery space and already looks like an exhibition not to be missed.

Lindsay Seers, It has to be this way 1.5
Preview: Saturday 23 October, 2 to 4 pm
Exhibition: 23 October 2010 to 2 January 2011

In 1999 a young woman was involved in a moped accident. She suffered damage
to both her short and long-term memory and was left unable to decipher her
experiences. A year later she went missing in Rome and has subsequently not been
found.
It has to be this way1.5 is a new commission by aspex and marks Lindsay Seers’
continued attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the
young woman, her stepsister, Christine Parkes.
The artist, obsessed with the transformative powers of photography, follows
streams of associations; her stepsister’s boyfriend’s diary, her mother’s memories
alongside a shared archive of images and papers, determine the outline of her
ongoing journey and the form for the unfolding narrative of the work. The viewer
enters a structure in which everything is connected, a memory theatre painted
blue, a giant star, a doubled video, and a documentary and novella that weave
together a complex set of relationships which shift at every turn.
What constitutes the artistic practice of Lindsay Seers is not mere storytelling,
but a matrix where there is no formal separation between the conceptual
investigation of the act of photography, the camera as apparatus, the common
desire for film and photography to act as evidence of events, and the complex
historical and personal synchronicities of the events themselves. What we are
witnessing in the work of Seers is not so much a detached systematic outline of
these relationships, but the unfolding of the creative process, where the act of
observation and understanding influences the outcome of events.
Through Seers’ photographic explorations the past is constantly reconfigured, as
if it contains an infinite virtual potential for different outcomes, which are all
already embedded in one another.
Mead Gallery, University of Warwick, will also be exhibiting the work of Lindsay
Seers. The installation It has to be this way2 will be exhibited from 9 October
until 11 December 2010.
Lindsay Seers is based in London. She was recently awarded the Derek Jarman
Award with a commission of four short films for Channel 4. Her recent
exhibitions include It has to be this way2, at the National Gallery of Denmark
(2010), Persistence of Vision, FACT (2010), Steps into the Arcane,
Kuntsmuseum, Thurgau, Switzerland (2010), Altermodern, Fourth Tate
Triennial, Tate Britain (2009), It has to be this way, Matt’s Gallery, London

"Following an accident, a chain of events takes us on a journey through history where everything is connected. It has to be this way 1.5 continues Lindsay Seers’ filmic and photographic search for her lost stepsister, Christine Parkes, in which she reconstructs a past in which characters move across history. By recasting photography as an act that actually creates experiences, rather than explores them, Seers’ work extends the boundaries of photography."

SAVE THE ARTS

Following on from Shrigley, Deller and Wallinger, this week it is the turn of Yinka Shonibare to present the work he has created for the campaign against cuts. The number of signatures on the petition now stands at 43,864 which is still a long way from the 100,000 needed to ensure a discussion in parliament.
It's creeping up gradually but the campaign still needs a lot more support, so if you haven't already done so, sign the petition now, and make sure all your colleagues and contacts do to!

Exhibition Opening Event: Artists In Residence, Dorking

Friday 1st October, 6pm to 9pm, St Martins Walk, Shopping Centre, Dorking, RH4 1PQ
Artists Ackroyd & Harvey, Anne Brodie and Amanda Loomes come together for their first joint exhibition held in their hometown in ‘Artists in Residence, Dorking’.
The artists have well established reputations and have been the recipients of numerous international awards and prizes.
'Artists in Residence, Dorking’ challenges the artists to make a new body of work in response to their hometown and surrounding locale whilst considering the implications of a long-term residency with regard to habit and habitat. At a time when our culture is in the process of realising the value of local sustainability, the project questions what local means to these artists.
Mole Valley District Council have been actively involved in supporting the project and will be working with the artists to transform a vacant shop into a temporary gallery to be launched during the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival.
A series of talks in conjunction with arc will be held during the exhibition including Jonathan Parsons in conversation with the artists on Saturday 9 October at 7pm and Mark Segal in conversation with Anne Brodie and amanda Loomes on Thursday 14 October at 7pm.

ABERYSTWYTH RESIDENCY - OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS

For all those who came to Josefina Posch's talk last Thursday at aspex and were impressed and
envious of all the residencies she has completed, here are the details of a fantastic residency based in Wales.  You only have until 30 September to apply though - so make a start on your application today!

Applications are now invited for the Laura Ashley Residency Award.  The successful artist will be based for a period of 3 months between May - July 2011 at the Creative Arts Units at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University.

The residency is open to UK visual artists in all disciplines including applied arts.  The aim of the residency is to allow an artist ‘time out’ to develop their work as they wish while also including 12 days of education work with people in the locality. The basic idea of this education work should be proposed by the artist with their application, and the details of the project will be planned and organised by Arts Centre staff with the artist, before their arrival.

The successful artist will receive studio space of c. 35 square metres, accommodation, living expenses for the duration of their residency and extra payment per day of education work.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s Artists’ Residencies are based in the award-winning Creative Arts Units designed by Thomas Heatherwick.  The residencies offer the chance for the artist to step away from the everyday constraints of life and experience time in which to develop individual artistic practice, and also to exchange ideas in a creative atmosphere with people from other disciplines. The Laura Ashley Residency also offers the opportunity to plan and carry out an educational project within the area. We do expect the successful artist to have some experience of education work, but they will also receive support and guidance from the experienced Visual Arts Education team.

How To Apply:
The deadline for applications for this residency which will take place from the start of May until the end of July 2011 is 30 September 2010. Applications can arrive at any point up until this date; early applications are encouraged.

Applicants should fill in the Residency application form and send it to the address listed on the form, together with the visual and printed material and references as requested.

If further copies of the form are required, by post or by email, please email etr@aber.ac.uk

Or call 01970 622887/ 621634
